Vietnamese Deportation
On January 22, 2008, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) representatives signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Communist regime of Vietnam, putting into place an agreement by which non-US citizens of Vietnamese descent who came to the US after July 12, 1995 and have committed an “aggravated felony” could be deported back to Vietnam. This agreement currently affects approximately 4500 people, with 1500 who face immediate removal orders, regardless of whether the affected individuals have families, have served their sentence, entered plea bargains long before the MOU was conceivable that gave up their rights in exchange for reduced sentences, or have committed petty crimes such as shoplifting. This repatriation agreement was set to begin 60 days after it was signed by both parties. That start date is March 22, 2008.
